Morning coffee
Back
Amsterdam
(Netherlands)

What can you expect?
Have a coffee with me (Marijke) and let's chat about Amsterdam. After one hour the city will have no more secrets for you! I will give you all the tips you want to make your stay in my city unforgettable.

I like to tell you all about Amsterdam. I like to brainstorm in all languages such as English, German, Italian and of course my native language Dutch. You will meet me in the morning at one of the oldest squares of Amsterdam where local life goes hand in hand with the touristy “Zeedijk” and the “Wallen”. You will hear all about this district but the most special part of this “coffee hour” are the tips on request. You will get informed: where are the trendy shops, how do the Dutch people live, where can you find the hip nightlife and what is a really must to do in Amsterdam?

Nieuwmarkt

Description Neighbourhood
The history of Nieuwmarkt Square is closely linked to the history of the Jewish population of Amsterdam. Of the 100,000 inhabitants the city boasted in 1900 some 60,000 were Jewish. Portuguese Jews who fled the Spanish Inquisition first came to the city. As they were not accepted by the traditional guilds, they applied themselves to the diamond trade. Street trade also flourished.

Nieuwmarkt is dominated by De Waag. The building looks like a medieval fortress, however, it was once one of the city gates: St. Anthony Gate. Look closely and you will see the bullet holes in the round towers which date from around 1500.
