What is Like-a-local?

Like-a-local.com offers travellers the opportunity to experience the real life in the city. Based on two themes:
GO Meet with the true connoisseurs of local life, the locals themselves.
EAT Taste the local cuisine at the home of a local.

Who runs Like-a-local?

Like-a-local was started by three friends since primary school; Mandy, Marieke and Esther. The idea of Like-a-local was conceived during one of our city trips. After yet another "frustration" of eating between tourists and discovering the nice local restaurants only on the last day of our trip, we decided we needed locals to inform us on the best local places and attractions.

Why does Like-a-local only put activities on the website in major cities?

In our experience Like-a-local is popular among tourists who visit major cities (> 200.000 inhabitants), resulting hardly any bookings outside those cities.

How can I registrate as a local?

1. At http://www.like-a-local.com/register/ you can fill in a form for become a local. Fill in your personalia and information about the activity you would like to do with a traveller.

2. Please note the ? in the form where you can find more information and explanation on what you need to fill in.

3. When you click "submit", you will receive an e-mail with a link to confirm your registration.

4. With this initial login you can go to 'log in locals' on the homepage and you will go to your profile. Here you can change your password, change your personalia or change or add activities. You can also manage your reservations here.

5. Your activity will be online within 3 days after a check of Like- a-local. You will receive an e-mail from us that your activity is available on the site.

6. You will start receiving bookings/requests via the new like-a-local website.

What do I have to fill in for registration?

You have to fill in your personalia and the activity/activities you would like to do with travellers. Please note the ? in the form where you can find more information and explanation what you have to fill in.

What is the definition of a local?

All inhabitants of a city can become a local. A local likes to share his daily life with travellers and tell more about the local secrets of his/her city. A local speaks English, because the communication between travellers and locals is in English.

What kind of activities can I organize for travellers?

You can choose between two kind of activities:
GO Like-a-local
- Show travellers your interesting spots in your city so they can experience your city as a local inhabitant instead of a tourist.
Think of a local walk, shop tour, market tour, nightlife tour, or
something more special as sharing your hobby

EAT Like-a-local
- Let travellers taste the local atmosphere and cuisine at your home.
For example, breakfast, lunch or dinner at your home, may be typical local dishes, You can prepare it yourself or make it a shared cooking experience together with the travellers.

What language(s) do I have to speak?

The communication between traveller and local is in English.

Can I temporarily remove an activity from the site (because of holidays, etc)?

Yes, you can, please email us at contact@like-a-local.com with the
activity and the period for which you would like to have it removed
temporarily.

How can I change my password?

You can change your password after you login in to your profile.

After changing my password it's not working

Send an email to contact@like-a-local.com to request a new password.

I forgot my password or login.

Your login is your email address. If you forgot your password you go to login locals at the homepage. Fill in your login (your email address) and click on 'forgot password'. You will receive a new
password by email.

How will I receive the fee for the reservation?

Travellers pay like-a-local, like-a-local pays the local after the activity has taken place and will deduct a 20% commission over the booking fee for its services.

How many activities can I upload at my profile?

You can upload as many activities as you like.

I would like to do an activity with travellers in a city which is not yet on the site. Can I add this city?

In the registration form you can click at 'country not in the list'. At the city form field you write down the name of the city. Like-a-local will add the country and city to the site.

I live at the countryside, can I become a local for like-a-local?

Like-a-local focus on world cities, so at this moment it is not possible to
become a local for Like-a-local.

Booking procedure


Where can I find the Terms and Conditions?

What is the booking procedure like?

1. You will receive an e-mail with a link to your local account after a traveller has “booked” your activity on the website.

2. By clicking on the link you enter your account where you are able to:
a. Confirm the date requested by the traveller (if this suits you, of course)
b. Suggest another date if the requested date is not convenient.
c. Decline the request
2. The traveller responds to the reply by paying for the activity for the confirmed or suggested date, by credit card,ideal, or paypal

4. Both the traveller and the local will receive a voucher via e-mail with all the details about the activity and the meeting point. This voucher is also the proof of payment and confirmes the booking

5. After the activity has taken place you will receive the bookings fee minus the commission on your bank account, like you are used to.

I receive a request for an activity but I am not available

Go to the homepage and log in as a local, and click on the request. Then click “decline”

I receive a request but I would like to reschedule

Go to the home page and log in as a local, select the request and then select another date and/or time, and click on “confirm”

When will I receive the money for the reservation?

The amount will be transferred within two weeks after the date of the blokked activity

Meeting the traveller


Where do I meet the traveller?

Each activity has a route description part. When you create the activity, you can fill this in (and yuo can always change it after creation by clicking on “my activities” at the local’s home page) Be sure to also write down an exact address so that it is always clear where you will meet.

How will I obtain the traveller’s contact details?

You will receive a voucher with the traveller’s name, email address, and cell phone number as soon as the traveller has accepted the booking by paying

There is an emergency (illness for instance) and I am not able to go forward with the activity. What should I do?

Contact the traveller ASAP and try to reschedule. When you are not able to reschedule, the activity will be canceled and the traveller will be fully reimbursed. The local will not receive any money
